Australian football tonight has confirmed that from the 2022 program onwards, Australia's biggest football tournament will be played as the 'Australian Cup'.
The transition from the FFA Cup, launched in 2014, to the Australian Cup will take place in the coming weeks as the First Rounds of the 2022 tournament are held nationally and regionally across the country.
The change in the name of the Australian Cup announces a new era of competition that regularly draws more than 700 clubs from all walks of life across Australia, including primary, academic, and professional sports standards.
However, the name change incorporates and acknowledges the history of Australian football. Between 1962 and 1968 the first Australian Cup competed between the best league teams of the time.
Football Australia chief executive James Johnson said the name of the Australian Cup was popular with participants in the game during a survey and discussion about changing the name of the tournament following the change of name of Football Australia to Football Federation Australia (FFA) in December. 2020.
“Through interviews with Australian football historians, interviews with fans and participants in the tournament, it has been agreed that the name Australia Cup really speaks to what the tournament is and what it stands for. We are pleased that through this program the leading players, clubs and officials can feel respected and connected to the tournament, ”said Johnson.
“The research and discussions we have done on this name change show that people will be very happy with the changes to the Australian Cup from 2022 onwards.
“We have really changed the FFA Cup this year and changing the name of the tournament to the Australian Cup is the next exciting step in this transformation. It was the year of many of the first games - for the first time the competition was played live and free to go on air via Network 10, giving it an unprecedented exposure. We have also organized games in the final round of the tournament so that more can be played on the weekends, making it friendly to thousands of supporters across the country. The awarding of one of Australia’s ‘spots’ in the AFC Champions League also meant that this year community clubs up to the Isuzu UTE A-League clubs may dream of representing their fans, communities, and Australia at the international level.
Our Cup tournament has always been one that has connected and unified the Australian football community, and we believe that the name change will ultimately work to promote the tournament nationally and internationally, as clubs aspire to win a nationally representative football tournament.
“Like the Australian Cup in 2022, we want to see more clubs across the country join the tournament. We will see a tournament where all the games are important. As it is played in the winter months, we are also looking at how fast and fun the ball will be. We are very excited about the launch of the new chapter of the Australian Cup in 2022, ”he said.
The Australian Cup title was officially announced on the Network 10 live and free cover of the final FFA Cup Final match tonight between Melbourne Victory FC and Central Coast Mariners FC at Melbourne's AAMI Park (starting at 8pm AEDT).
The broadcast included a video presentation showing some of the Australian Cup origins (see the player above) and reflection on its history, with comments from winners Joe Alagich, John McDaid, John Brown, Alistair Scott, Stan Ackerley, and Ray Baartz, as well as football legend George Contains.
